On Saturday, September 26th, author and certified death doula Becky Robison will be signing copies of her debut book, MY PARENTS ARE DEAD: WHAT NOW? (Quirk Books; Out Now) at the Chicago End-Of-Life Expo.
A Chicago native and producer of the event, Becky has made death education and planning her life practice, offering the guidance, warmth, and wit that she lacked after the loss of her own parents. Becky's writing in particular is an important representation of the vital, overlooked posthumous planning community, and I would love to discuss potential coverage of her and her work with you.
Chicago End-of-Life Expo: Event Details
Location: Sleeping Village; 3734 W Belmont Ave, Chicago, IL 60618
Date/Time: Saturday, September 26th, 12:00pm - 4:00pm
After losing both parents, Becky Robison devoted herself to making death and postdeath logistics easier on others. In My Parents Are Dead: What Now?, she draws on her own experience, plus interviews with experts ranging from monument makers to morticians, to walk you through:
Asking your parents about their end-of-life wishes while you can
Getting a body buried, cremated, or donated to science
Planning a funeral
Securing a death certificate
Dealing with your parents’ property—or debt
Handling even more tricky issues you never wanted to be in charge of
And still being able to laugh, a little, sometimes
Additionally, Becky's recent TikTok success answering unfiltered, often esoteric, questions about death with humor and honesty shows a desire for this kind of practical, human perspective.
Some of her TikTok, as well as an essay she wrote for Salon can be found below:
Becky is co-producing the End-of-Life Expo with prominent death doula Erica Reid Gerdes of Waxwing Journeys and comedian Alison Zeidman (Archer, Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, Adam Ruins Everything). The event will bring giref and loss practitioners, vendors, educational information, interactive art projects, and comedy under one roof to help demystify death and support attendees with end-of-life planning.
Becky's work is all at once unique and part of a larger community dedicated to supporting each other through the loss of loved ones.
