Sports Highlights January 2023

Super Bowl LVII Participants Determined
The Philadelphia Eagles advanced to their second Super Bowl in six seasons, taking down the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game, 31-7. They will meet against long-time former head coach Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs, who defeated the Bengals in the AFC Championship Game, 23-20. It is their third Super Bowl appearance in the last four seasons for Kansas City. This is the first Super Bowl game with two brothers (Jason and Travis Kelce) playing against each other. In addition, it's the first Super Bowl with two African American starting quarterbacks, Jalen Hurts and Patrick Mahomes.
Joel Embiid Makes MVP Case Versus Nikola Jokic and the Nuggets
For the past two seasons, Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid has been at the top of his game, yet came up short twice in the NBA MVP race against Nuggets superstar Nikola Jokic. The two big men squared off on January 28 with their teams at or near the league's top standings. On this night, it was all Embiid, scoring 47 points and hauling 18 rebounds in a 126-119 win. Jokic was solid with 24 points, nine assists, and eight rebounds, but Embiid 1, Jokic 0 in 2022-23. The two teams meet again on March 27 in Denver.
Scott Rolen was Elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame
In his sixth season on the Hall of Fame ballot, Scott Rolen received enough votes to be elected as one of the game's greats. He joins the likes of Mike Schmidt, Brooks Robinson, George Brett, and Wade Boggs, among others, as third basemen in the Hall of Fame. Rolen received 76.3 percent of the vote, above the required 75 percent for induction. He played 17 seasons in MLB, seven with the Phillies, six with the Cardinals, four with the Reds, and two with the Blue Jays. Rolen retired with a Rookie of the Year, eight Gold Glove Awards, and seven All-Star appearances.
PGA Tour Q-School Returns to TPC Sawgrass
The PGA Tour Q-School returns to TPC Sawgrass for the first time in more than ten years. In addition, it will host the event along with nearby Sawgrass Country Club in a televised event in mid-December. The event will feature 170 players over four rounds on the TPC Sawgrass Valley Course and two of Sawgrass Country Club's three nines. Not a stranger to significant events, the country club hosts a collegiate event and previously hosted The Players Championship from 1977 through 1981.
